Delhi residents are embracing new technology, as EVs made up 16.7% of all vehicles sold in December

Since the implementation of its EV policy, Delhi has registered 93,239 EVs as of December 31, 2022. In 2022, roughly 55% of all EV sales were two-wheelers.

Kailash Gahlot, the minister of transport for Delhi, said on Wednesday that 16.7% of the automobiles sold in December 2022 were electric vehicles, and that these numbers demonstrated how amenable the citizens of the city were to embracing the new technology. Speaking during a news conference, Gahlot said that 7,046 electric vehicles were sold in December and that among all states and union territories, Delhi had the highest percentage of EV sales that month.

The contribution will rise to 20.5% in the month if the sales of hybrid-petrol automobiles are taken into account. According to him, Delhi registered 7,046 electric vehicles in December, an increase of 86% over the same month last year. He emphasised that sales of electric vehicles have increased ever since the government announced its Electric Vehicle Policy in August 2020. In 2019, sales of electric vehicles accounted for 3.6% of all vehicle sales, but by 2022, that percentage had increased to 10.27%.

“Delhiites have stepped forward and adopted the new technology. In 2020, the contribution of electric vehicles in overall sales dipped to 2.9% due to COVID-19 but then there was a rise of 5.6% in the contribution in 2021. Last year, the overall contribution of electric vehicles was 10.7%,” he added.
There are 1.9 lakh electric vehicles on Delhi’s roads and after the policy, 93,239 vehicles have been sold in the national capital.

Delhi registered 93,239 electric vehicles till December 31, 2022, since the launch of the EV policy. Two-wheelers accounted for nearly 55% of total EV sales in 2022, according to the Transport department. “With the number of electric vehicles growing, we are also ready with the required private and public charging infrastructure with a total of over 2300 charging points and more than 200 battery swapping stations live across the city,” Gahlot said.
On August 7, 2020, the Delhi EV Policy 2020 was introduced, designating two- and three-wheelers as the priority vehicle category. The goal of the strategy is for electric vehicles to be quickly adopted and make up 25% of all new vehicle registrations by 2024. According to the statement, out of the 93,239 EVs that have been registered overall since the policy’s start, 5,189 were registered in 2020, 25,809 in 2021, and 62,241 in 2022.

High-speed two-wheelers made up nearly 55% of its overall sales in 2022, an increase from 29% in 2021. The sales of three-wheelers, which included e-rickshaws, electric cars, and cargo trucks, contributed 35%.

Private cars registered more frequently than commercial taxis under four-wheelers, while the overall 4W vehicle segment made up 9% of registrations. According to the report, the bus segment performed well, contributing 0.6%, and 399 buses were registered in 2022. Since the announcement of an incentive programme for the section in June of last year, more than 500 e-cycles have also been sold, it was said.
