Range and Charging
The Tata Tiago EV is an electric car that comes in two versions – the MR (Medium Range) and the LR (Long Range). The MR comes with a 19.2kWh Lithium Ferrous Phosphate (LFP) battery that powers a 61hp electric motor, while the LR comes with a 24kWh LFP battery that powers a 75hp electric motor. The MR is available in two trims – XE and XT – with the latter being more popular, while the LR is offered in five trim levels.
The Tata Tiago EV LR has a claimed range of 315km on a full charge. When it comes to charging, the Tiago EV LR can be fully charged from 10 percent using a regular 15A charger in about nine hours, which is quite reasonable. However, using a 25kWh DC fast charger can do the same in about an hour, which is significantly faster. The Tiago EV LR can also be charged from 10 to 100 percent on a 7.2Kw AC home charger in 3.6 hours, which is quite impressive.
Battery and Motor
The Tata Tiago EV Long Range (LR) is an electric hatchback that is equipped with a 75hp permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSP) and a 24kWh LFP battery. The battery is positioned in a split format in place of the fuel tank, and it is placed beneath the boot floor. The absence of a frunk is understandable as the engine bay space is taken up by the motor and controller unit.
With a weight of about 1,155kg, the Tiago EV may seem to have a low torque of 114Nm, but this is compensated by a shorter final drive gear and software tweaks. Compared to the Tigor EV, the Tiago EV has a lower torque of 56Nm, but it is 80kg lighter. The 320V architecture of the Tiago EV is more energy-efficient than the Tigor EV's 350V system.
The Tiago EV's battery is rated at 24kWh, which should be enough for a range of about 300km on a single charge, depending on driving conditions. The battery is also equipped with regenerative braking, which helps to extend the range of the vehicle.
Top Speed and Performance
The Tata Tiago EV Long Range (LR) version offers a comfortable driving experience with ample performance to keep up with traffic and tuck into gaps. The hatchback is powered by a 75hp permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSP) that draws energy from a 24kWh LFP battery. While the 114Nm torque may seem low, the Tiago EV gets a shorter final drive gear and some software tweaks to counter the torque deficit. The Tiago EV gets two drive modes - City and Sport - with the latter unlocking the full potential of the motor. Acceleration feels smooth and linear, but the electric response is intentionally blunted for a more relaxed roll-on, reducing battery drain.
In Sport mode, the Tiago EV has enough poke to keep the driver entertained. The car clocks 0-100kph in 14.72sec, and power delivery is smooth, although it begins to taper off as it approaches triple-digit speeds, maxing out at 120kph. The suspension of the Tiago EV is a highlight, feeling mature and soaking up even the harshest of road shocks. Handling is tidy, and the steering is light with a tight turning radius, making light work of nipping in and out of gaps in traffic and parking in tight spots.
