Overview:

The Porsche Taycan is an electric car that defies the usual expectation of sacrificing driving characteristics for eco-friendliness. Unlike other electric vehicles, the Taycan prioritizes delivering an engaging driving experience over offering a soulless mode of transportation. Porsche's use of battery power provides an opportunity to build a vehicle that is designed for human engagement rather than autonomy. Although its EPA estimated range of 246 miles falls short of competitors like the Tesla Model S and Lucid Air, the Taycan still manages to drive like a Porsche, with an impeccable sense of confidence and control. The Taycan comes in several models, ranging from the 402-hp single-rear-motor base model to the incredibly fast 750-hp Turbo S. Regardless of the model, every Taycan comes with a two-speed transmission that balances epic acceleration with highway cruising range. Furthermore, the Taycan's 800-volt architecture allows it to charge at a remarkable rate of up to 270 kWh on a powerful DC fast charger. The Taycan also features a low-slung driving position and a 16.8-inch curved display to complete the typical Stuttgart driving experience. Porsche has even created a wagon version of the Taycan, called the Taycan Cross and Sport Turismo, which offers a unique take on the sedan. Overall, the Porsche Taycan proves that electric cars can provide an exhilarating driving experience without compromising on eco-friendliness.

Price and Variants:

In 2023, Porsche has updated their Taycan models, including previous versions, with new battery and charging algorithms. These updates increase the range and charging speed of the vehicle. The Taycan now preconditions its battery to a higher temperature, allowing it to reach a max 270 kWh charge at a higher state of charge. The infotainment display has also been redesigned with a more colorful and faster user interface, including wireless Android Auto and the ability to search for charging stations using charging-station output as a filter. Additionally, the Variable Light Control, previously only available in the Taycan GTS, is now available for all Taycans with a panoramic glass roof, allowing drivers to toggle the roof from clear to opaque electronically. For those looking for a more affordable option, the all-wheel-drive Taycan 4S is recommended. It comes with a 522-hp powertrain, adaptive air suspension, partial leather interior, and keyless entry. Skipping personalization options will keep the cost down, but upgrading to the Performance Battery Plus is worth it as it increases the pack size and horsepower rating to 562. The Performance package is also recommended for improved agility and stability.
Model Price

Taycan 4S $107,950
Taycan GTS $135,550
Taycan Turbo $154,750
Taycan Turbo S $188,850

Power and Performance:

The Taycan lineup boasts a range of electric motors, with most models featuring two motors, one powering the front wheels and the other the rear. Depending on the trim level, the motors produce varying amounts of power. The base model, which is rear-wheel drive only, generates between 402 to 469 horsepower, depending on the battery size. The 4S, on the other hand, churns out either 522 or 562 horsepower, depending on the battery size. The Taycan GTS, with its 590 horsepower and 626 pound-feet of torque, is considered the sweet spot. Meanwhile, the top-of-the-line Turbo and Turbo S models come with a big battery that generates 670 and 750 horsepower, respectively. All Taycan models come equipped with a two-speed transmission, which provides a thrilling shift during hard acceleration. The car's acceleration is impressive, with the 4S model hitting 60 mph in just 3.4 seconds. The Turbo S, however, takes things to a whole new level, delivering rocket-ship takeoffs and hitting 60 mph in a mere 2.4 seconds. While the Taycan's low-slung driving position and precise steering make it unique among electric vehicles, some reviewers have noted that the brake pedal could be more responsive. Despite its impressive performance, the Taycan remains a comfortable ride, even when equipped with 21-inch wheels and low-profile tires. According to one reviewer, the car never felt stiff or harsh.

Range, Charging and Battery:

Compared to the Tesla Model S, the Taycan's driving range is not as impressive, topping out between 206 and 246 miles depending on the battery size and electric motors. However, all models feature an 800-volt architecture that allows for a peak charging rate of 270 kilowatts. Porsche claims that models with the larger battery (labeled as 93.4 kWh, but only 83.7 kWh is usable) can be charged from 5 to 80 percent in just 23 minutes. While fast charging at 270 kW and 50 kW is standard, the option for 150 kW charging is available. However, finding an 800-volt DC fast charger may prove to be difficult. In our comparison test, we found that peak charging rates were not the most informative metric. For instance, charging at a 50 kW DC fast charger takes 93 minutes according to Porsche. Our experience during the EV1000 rally further highlighted the real-world variables in charging. Despite the Taycan's charging capabilities, the availability and accessibility of charging stations can significantly impact battery life and driving range.

Interior:

The Taycan boasts a high-tech interior that exudes a sense of understated elegance, typical of Porsche models. The cabin is highly customizable with a wide selection of opulent materials and color combinations to choose from. To enhance comfort, the Taycan offers numerous luxurious features such as four-zone climate control, heated rear seats, a heated steering wheel, and massaging front seats. Though the standard configuration is 2+2 seating, a third seat can be added to the back row as an option. However, the rear seats and storage space were found to be somewhat inadequate, and the low front seat was not easy to maneuver into. Nevertheless, the view from the driver's seat is outstanding.

Infotainment and Connectivity:

Inside the Taycan, you'll find an abundance of screens, but you won't see many physical buttons or knobs. The dashboard boasts a curved 16.8-inch display for the gauges, as well as two touchscreens at the center of the console that handle the infotainment system. The larger 10.9-inch top screen is seamlessly integrated into the dash and provides access to essential functions, while the smaller 8.4-inch touchscreen beneath it allows users to adjust climate settings, check battery status, input navigation details, and interact with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto features. Additionally, this screen enables users to open and close trunks and charge ports. The front passenger gets their own 10.9-inch touchscreen, and back seat passengers can control their own environment through an optional 5.9-inch touchscreen that manages rear HVAC and seat heating.

Safety and Warranty:

The Taycan comes equipped with standard driver-assistance technology that prioritizes safety on the road. This technology includes forward-collision warning, automated emergency braking, lane-departure warning, and lane-keeping assist. For those interested in more advanced features, Porsche offers these for an additional cost. To learn about the Taycan's performance in crash tests, it's recommended to visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) websites. Some of the notable safety features that are available on the Taycan include adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go technology, remote-controlled parking, and night vision. These technologies provide additional convenience and protection to drivers, especially in challenging driving conditions. Porsche offers a warranty plan that is comparable to other luxury-EV brands in the market. The limited warranty covers four years or 50,000 miles, while the powertrain warranty extends to eight years or 100,000 miles. However, the warranty coverage for the Taycan's electrical components is capped at eight years or 100,000 miles, which is different from Tesla's unlimited mileage offering for the same duration. It's important to note that the Taycan does not come with complimentary scheduled maintenance, which is something to consider when calculating the total cost of ownership over time.
