Overview: 2023 Tesla Model 3
Although there are plenty of opinions to be had about Tesla and its CEO Elon Musk, it's hard to deny that the Model 3 electric car has made a significant impact in the world of EVs. With its reasonable price point, impressive driving range, and strong performance, it has become a popular choice for buyers and remains competitive against newer electric options like the Hyundai Ioniq 6 and Polestar 2. While there have been some concerns about build quality, our own long-term Model 3 and various test cars have shown that it is still a reliable and enjoyable car to drive. Although SUV lovers may prefer the Model Y, the Model 3 is practical and exciting to drive. We recommend the Long Range model, which has an estimated range of 358 miles, although we can see the appeal of the Performance trim's additional power and sporty design.
Price and Variants: 2023 Tesla Model 3
As of 2023, there have been no significant updates to Tesla's Model 3 lineup. However, there are reports suggesting that a cosmetic overhaul is in the works, but it may not be ready until the following year.
If you're in the market for a Model 3, there are three options available: the Rear-Wheel Drive, Long Range, and Performance models. The Rear-Wheel Drive is the most affordable at $43,630, but its EPA-estimated driving range of 272 miles may not be enough for some drivers. If range anxiety is a concern, we recommend the Long Range model, which provides an estimated 358 miles of driving per charge. Regardless of which model you choose, all Model 3s come standard with heated front seats, navigation, and Tesla's Autopilot semi-autonomous driving system.

Power and Performance: 2023 Tesla Model 3
The Model 3, like many electric vehicles, accelerates smoothly and quietly with a strong initial burst of power from its electric motor. It boasts impressive speed, particularly in certain trim levels. In our testing, the Long Range model with rear-wheel drive went from zero to 60 mph in 5.1 seconds, while the Performance version accomplished the same feat in a mere 3.5 seconds, half a second quicker than the Long Range we tested previously. By storing the battery beneath the vehicle's floor, Tesla ensures that the Model 3 maintains a low center of gravity, providing a stable feel in corners and responsive handling. The Model 3's steering is precise, with three customizable settings that allow for varying levels of steering effort. While the ride is firm, it's not overly jarring, though road noise can be noticeable due to the lack of engine noise. Nevertheless, the Model 3 remains an exceptional vehicle in terms of power, performance, and handling.
Range, Charging and Battery: 2023 Tesla Model 3
The Model 3 comes in three different trims, each offering a unique estimated driving range. The base model, which is rear-wheel-drive, has a range of 272 miles and is the most economical option. The Long Range and Performance models are more expensive but offer higher estimated ranges of 358 and 315 miles, respectively. However, achieving these distances may not be easy, as evidenced by our long-term testing of the Long Range Model 3. In terms of charging, the Model 3 provides a variety of options including the Supercharger network, DC public-charging stations with adapters, 240- and 120-volt outlets, as well as home-charging stations.
Interior: 2023 Tesla Model 3
The Tesla Model 3 boasts a unique interior design that sets it apart from other cars in the market. Instead of traditional buttons and knobs, most functions are accessed through a large touchscreen in the center of the dashboard. While this may take some getting used to, it creates a sleek and uncluttered look inside the vehicle. However, the steering wheel controls for things like the side mirrors and steering column are unconventional and may be difficult for some to use.
Thanks to its low, flat floor, the Model 3 offers a spacious and open feel inside. The front seats are comfortable and provide ample support, but the same cannot be said for the cramped and low rear seats. These seats are not suitable for long journeys, especially for adults. The 60/40 split-folding rear seats are easy to fold down, creating a larger cargo area. Additionally, the seatbacks fold flat to provide an uninterrupted cargo floor, allowing for the transportation of larger items. With the rear seats down, the Model 3 can accommodate up to 15 carry-on suitcases. The cabin also features numerous bins and cubbies for additional storage.
Infotainment and Connectivity: 2023 Tesla Model 3
The Model 3 comes with standard features like Navigation, Bluetooth, and USB connectivity, but surprisingly, it lacks options for AM radio or SiriusXM satellite radio. However, it does offer various internet-streaming radio choices as a standard feature. Unfortunately, it cannot be equipped with Android Auto or Apple CarPlay. Nonetheless, to make charging-station stops more enjoyable, the Model 3 provides a plethora of entertainment options through its central display. You can access Netflix, YouTube, and an array of arcade games to pass the time.
Safety and Warranty: 2023 Tesla Model 3
The safety and driver-assistance features of Tesla's Model 3 are notable for their impressive capabilities, such as automatic lane changes. Despite concerns about the name "Autopilot" being misleading, the system offers one of the best feature sets in the industry and operates smoothly. To learn more about the Model 3's crash-test results, you can visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) websites.
The car's key safety features include standard automated emergency braking, lane-departure warning, and adaptive cruise control. Tesla offers some of the longest warranty coverage in the EV segment, although it's disappointing that corrosion protection is not included. The Long Range model does include an additional 20,000 miles on the coverage period of its battery and drive components.
The limited warranty covers four years or 50,000 miles, and the powertrain warranty covers eight years or 100,000 miles. However, there is no complimentary scheduled maintenance included in the coverage.
