The renowned motorcycle firm Indian has teamed up with the equally iconic electric bike maker Super73 to combine the former’s branding with the latter’s high power e-bikes. As a result, The eFTR Hooligan 1.2 is an e-bike with an Indian theme.

No motorbike licence is required.

Indian Motorcycle has previously teased us with electrification plans.

When we originally discovered the company’s trademark for the moniker eFTR, we assumed they were developing a true electric version of their FTR motorcycle.

We were, as it turned out, completely wrong. The eFTR was transformed into a kid’s electric dirt bike as part of a collaboration with Razor.

Now, thanks to a new collaboration with Super73, the eFTR emblem is making a comeback, this time on something big enough for adults to ride as well.

The eFTR Hooligan appears to be built in substantial part on Super73’s well-known S2 electric bike.

However, this is not a stock S2. The bike was modified by adding “inverted front forks, mid-height, moto-style handlebars, a distinctive LED headlight with an FTR-inspired wind deflector, and more aggressive tyres,” according to Indian. The eFTR Hooligan 1.2 also looks to be missing the stock front and rear fenders, lowers the battery to the downtube (which likely leads in superior balance), and has a gold chain to give it the true Indian Motorcycle look.

The Super73 bones are still there, but they have taken on a more Indian appearance. That is exactly what Indian was aiming for, according to Ross Clifford, Vice President of Parts, Garments, and Accessories at Indian Motorcycle:

“No other electric bicycle brand has defined itself as vividly as SUPER73. Its moto-culture DNA and outgoing, adventure-seeking passion for two-wheels make them the ideal partner for Indian Motorcycle. But it’s far more than just brand personality. Like us, SUPER73 shares an unwavering commitment to their loyal and passionate customers, as well as to quality and innovation, marked by its sophisticated electric powertrain and an unmistakable product design that resonates with both non-motorcyclists and avid motorcycle riders.”

Expect the eFTR Hooligan 1.2 to ride differently than any other Indian (or sound like one, either). Despite a powerful electric motor with a peak of 2,000W of power, it travels on 20′′ fat tyre bike wheels and zips along virtually silently.

On throttle, it will reach a top speed of 20 mph (32 km/h), while riders who engage the pedal assist by utilising the pedals will be able to reach a top speed of 28 mph (45 km/h). That is the maximum permissible speed in the United States, hence the eFTR Hooligan 1.2 is legal as an electric bicycle. That means you won’t need a licence to ride a motorcycle.

The huge 960 Wh battery has a range of 75 kilometres (120 km). However, if you’re new to the world of electric bicycles, you should be aware that you’ll never be able to travel 70 miles on a single charge.

Sure, it’s a possibility. However, this necessitates keeping the e-bike in its lowest power level and foregoing the fun throttle. If you plan on riding about at 8 mph on pedal assist for half a day, you may reach the maximum range. However, if you’re like the rest of us and can’t get enough of that wonderful throttle and faster speeds, expect a lower range in the 20-40 mile area.

Nonetheless, the 960 Wh battery is far larger than the average battery pack on the e-bike market today. As a result, you’ll have enough of juice for hours of fun.

That’s rather typical for Super73, which has built a name on entertaining, sexy, and powerful e-bikes that outperform the majority of their competition.

In comparison to most city or mountain-style e-bikes we encounter on the streets and trails, the bulkier e-bikes are created with a moped or motorbike influence. As a result, Super73 is a natural match for Indian.

As Super73’s Co-Founder and CMO Michael Cannavo explained:

“With a rich heritage and racing DNA dating back more than a century, Indian Motorcycle is among a rare group of brands that can truly be defined as an ‘American original,’ and the team did an incredible job redesigning the SUPER73-S2 to capture the spirit of the iconic Indian Motorcycle brand. As a company that lives and breathes life on two wheels, everybody at SUPER73 appreciates the significance of Indian Motorcycle’s history, as well as its triumphant return and success in recent years. And that’s why we’re honored to align our brands with the introduction of the eFTR Hooligan 1.2.”

The eFTR Hooligan 1.2 is not cheap, costing US $3,999.99 (and will be available in the next months at Indian dealers or on Indian’s website). The S2 is already a premium bike at $2,995, and the Indian modifications aren’t going to make it any cheaper. They do, however, make some fascinating cosmetic and performance enhancements, as well as transform it into a limited edition bike with a clear tie to Indian’s legacy.

While this isn’t the cheapest way to get your hands on a Super73, it is one of the coolest.

Oh, and it’s a great way to get started on a new Indian!
