Lotus confirms that Lotus Electric SUV Will Make Its Debut on March 29. Lotus has never been connected with the phrases “electric,” “SUV,” or “China,” but here we are. After a lengthy teasing campaign, the Type 132, as it is now known by its codename, will eventually go on sale on March 29. Some would claim that Colin Chapman would have been horrified by the notion of a heavy, high-riding v

ehicle, but it’s 2022, and business is business.

The first-ever Lotus SUV, as well as the company’s second EV following the Evija hypercar, will not be constructed in Norfolk. The vehicle will instead be assembled in China at a newly built factory in Wuhan (yes, that Wuhan). It will be followed by a four-door coupe, the Type 133, and a smaller crossover, the Type 134, both of which will be EVs.

In fact, the Geely-owned business has stopped producing ICE-powered vehicles, with the Emira serving as the last gasp for the gasoline engine.

Despite releasing a number of previews, Lotus hasn’t said much about their SUV. We do know that it is built on a custom EV architecture that can accommodate battery packs as large as 120 kWh. The sports vehicle on stilts will be around the same size as the Porsche Cayenne and will be powered by two electric motors for all-wheel drive.

Other verified architecture characteristics include a wheelbase ranging from 2889 to 3100 millimetres (113.7 to 122 inches) and compatibility for quick charging via 800V technology. Expect 600-700 horsepower for a sprint from 0 to 62 mph (100 km/h) in as little as three seconds.

A four-door, five-seat heavy vehicle loaded with technology will be the antonym for Chapman’s “simplify, then add lightness” philosophy. The Lotus SUV will be a totally modern vehicle, with features such as active aero and a LiDAR setup, as well as a tilting infotainment system and a digital instrument cluster.

The Lotus Type 132, which was designed in the United Kingdom, is expected to go on sale by the end of the year or early in 2023. We’re excited to find out what its true name is, since some speculate that it will be called “Lambda.” That would be a departure from history, as sports automobiles typically began with the letter “E.”
