Indian automotive manufacturer Mahindra has unveiled the XUV400 Formula edition with a special livery inspired by the racing spirit at the Formula E World Championship. The event features open-wheeled electric cars, with India hosting the fourth round of the ninth season of the championship in Hyderabad. Mahindra has taken the opportunity to showcase its newest Gen3 Formula E race car alongside the XUV400 Formula edition. The carmaker has equipped the XUV400 with two battery packs: a 34.5kWh unit with a range of 375km and a 39.4kWh unit with up to 456km. The XUV400 Formula edition is priced between Rs 15.99 lakh and Rs 18.99 lakh (introductory ex-showroom pan-India).
Collaboration Effort Between Mahindra Formula E and Mahindra Advanced Design Europe
Mahindra has designed the livery of its newest race car as a collaborative effort between the Mahindra Formula E and Mahindra Advanced Design Europe (MADE) studio in the UK. The car’s livery features a mix of copper and red, “Mahindra” branding on the bonnet and sides, the team’s name “Mahindra Racing” on the C-pillar, and copper accents on the alloy wheels.
XUV400 Bookings Cross 10,000 Mark in Just a Weekend
The XUV400 Formula edition’s bookings opened on Republic Day 2023 and quickly crossed the 10,000 mark in just one weekend. Mahindra warned that these orders alone can result in a waiting period of up to seven months due to existing production capacities.
Powerful and Efficient Electric SUV
The XUV400 Formula edition is a powerful and efficient electric SUV with a motor that delivers 150PS and 310Nm, driving its front wheels. It has multi-drive modes, including Fun, Fast, and Fearless. The EV can also be charged using a 7.2kW AC wallbox charger, which takes six and a half hours to fully charge the battery. On the other hand, a 3.3kW charger needs 13 hours for the same job. It also gets a ‘single-pedal’ mode, while its nought to 100kmph sprint requires 8.3 seconds. The XUV400 supports 50kW DC fast-charging, which can replenish the battery in less than an hour.
Rivalry with Other EVs
The XUV400 Formula edition is a direct competitor to the Tata Nexon EV Prime and Max, but it is positioned a segment below the Hyundai Kona Electric and MG ZS EV. The electric SUV is available in two broad trims, the EC and EL, priced between Rs 15.99 lakh and Rs 18.99 lakh (introductory ex-showroom pan-India).
